Instructions: Air Fryer Blooming Onion
1. Prepare the Dipping Sauce:
- In the small bowl, whisk together all the dipping sauce ingredients (mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish, paprika, garlic powder, salt, cayenne, Worcestershire if using).
- Cover and refrigerate while you prepare the onion. This allows the flavours to meld.
2. Prepare the Onion: Air Fryer Blooming Onion
- Peel the onion, being careful to leave the root end intact. The root holds the petals together.
- Slice off about 1/2 to 3/4 inch from the top (non-root) end of the onion.
- Place the onion cut-side down on the cutting board. Starting about 1/2 inch from the root, make downward cuts all the way through to the cutting board. Make about 8-12 evenly spaced cuts radially around the onion, like cutting a pizza, but do not cut through the root.
- Carefully turn the onion over. Gently separate the “petals” outwards. Be gentle to avoid breaking them off near the root. You can remove the very central core pieces if they didn’t separate well, if desired.
3. Prepare the Dredging Stations: Air Fryer Blooming Onion
- In the first shallow bowl, whisk together all the Dry Mix ingredients (flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, salt, black pepper, cayenne).
- In the second shallow bowl, whisk together the Wet Mix ingredients (eggs, milk, optional hot sauce) until well combined.
4. Coat the Onion: Air Fryer Blooming Onion
This is the potentially messy part, but key to a good result!
- Place the cut onion, petal-side up, into the Dry Mix bowl. Spoon the flour mixture generously over the onion, making sure to get it down between all the petals. You can use your hands to gently work the flour in. Lift the onion, tap off excess flour, and set aside briefly.
- Carefully place the floured onion into the Wet Mix bowl. Spoon the egg wash all over the onion, again ensuring it gets between the petals. Lift the onion and let the excess egg wash drip off for a few seconds.
- Place the onion back into the Dry Mix bowl. Repeat the process of spooning the flour mixture all over, really focusing on coating every surface and getting between the petals. Press the coating on gently. This double coating creates a crispier finish.
5. Air Fry the Onion: Air Fryer Blooming Onion
- Preheat your air fryer to 180∘C (350∘F) for about 3-5 minutes.
- Generously spray the inside of the air fryer basket with cooking spray.
- Carefully place the coated onion, petal-side up (root-side down), into the air fryer basket. Ensure it fits comfortably without being squashed.
- Generously spray the top and sides of the coated onion with cooking spray. This is crucial for browning and crisping in the air fryer.
Air fry for 15 minutes.
- After 15 minutes, carefully open the air fryer. Check the browning. Spray any dry-looking flour spots with more cooking spray.
- Continue air frying for another 5-15 minutes, checking every 5 minutes. The total time will depend on your air fryer’s power and the size of your onion. It’s done when the coating is golden brown and crispy, and the onion petals are tender (you can test with a thin knife or skewer).
- Tip: If the outermost petals are browning too quickly before the center is cooked, you can loosely tent the onion with a small piece of aluminum foil for the last part of the cooking time.
6. Serve: Air Fryer Blooming Onion
- Carefully remove the blooming onion from the air fryer basket (a large spatula can help) and place it on a serving plate.
- Serve immediately with the chilled dipping sauce in the center or on the side.
- Enjoy your impressive, easier, and slightly healthier Air Fryer Blooming Onion!
